One of the most important aspects of commissioning an original piece is that Nick Allen work actually appreciates over the years. This has been seen time and time again when work has turned up for auction. This is an investment.

The Commission Process

The process of design and building commissioned pieces has been streamlined over the years to offer real value for money. In other words - it is not as expensive as you might think.

Examples of Marquetry - the construction of very thin slices of wood or 'veneers' to create colour and texture patterns in furniture.

Step 1:  Getting in Contact

Talk to Nick Allen about what you would like! Arrange a meeting at a suitable location or if possible, visit Nick at the Shop or Workshop to discuss your ideas - you are encouraged to bring along any material you think will help Nick visualize the project more accurately - photographs of furniture or ceramics that you particularly like for example.
All commissions are unique, however generally the commissioning process is straightforward and need not involve costs up front to establish basic design ideas and budget costing.
It is also worth stressing at this stage that there is no pressure to advance the proposed commission in any way and there certainly won't be any 'sales talk' from Nick or his staff - this stage is simply a 'fact finding' mission.

Step 2:  Working on the Ideas

Nick will sketch up a series of design options and present these ideas along with any samples produced to the client for approval.
A further meeting will be arranged to tighten up design parameters. More complete drawings will be created and these will be presented together with an estimated budget to the client for final approval.
On approval, a percentage of the quote will be required 'up front' - this is usually one third of the overall quote.

Step 3:  Building & Delivery

The final commissioned piece is readied for transport to the clients location or the client simply visits either the shop or the workshop to pick the piece up.
Nick Allen prides himself in the quality of craftsmanship involved in each commission but advice will be given on any special conditions the work needs to be kept in - non-damp conditions for furniture for example. This will ensure that the piece remains in excellent condition for many years to come.
